Roof Mounted System
This is the familiar option you often see on houses, with the tank lying horizontally above the panels.
- No moving parts
- No pump, sensor or valve
- Stainless steel tank
This option requires enough strength in your roof trusses. All new roofs have no trouble with this. We can help you determine if it will be safe on your roof.
Because the system is close-coupled (tank and panels adjacent) it means it uses the natural siphon of heating water to cycle through the tank. There is no need to run extra pumps from a tank on the ground up to the panels.
If you have roof space and strength, and are happy to have the tank visible on the roof, then this is a great option for you.

Split-System
Place the tank in traditional location on ground, with the solar panels separated on the roof.
- No weight on roof
- Only panels visible on roof
- Easy to install
- Stainless steel tank
A split-system solar heater takes the weight off the roof, and puts it on the ground. Probably in same location as the tank you are replacing. On older roofs this saves on having to add bracing to the trusses.
With slimline panels on your roof, when visible from the street it can look nicer. Further, if you have, or want to have, solar panels for other reasons, they will blend in with a tank-on-ground solar heater. The future of solar will mean your roof space will become a premium in the coming years, and this option takes up less surface on your roof.
If you have a sensible ground location for a tank, and want to keep options open for solar in the future, then this is a great option for you.

Frost-proof panels
For colder areas of Sydney and Central Coast, frost can damage regular panels. These have been developed for sub-zero temperatures and work really well in cold. Typically for low-lying valleys near creek beds.
- Evacuated tube prevent cracking in frost
- Can be mounted separately
- Stainless steel tank
The evacuated tube technology is much more resistant to cracking from cold. While they might not last in snowy areas, there are pockets in Sydney and surrounds that are colder and require the extra strength of frost resistant panels.
Derek from Superior Solar can help you determine if your roof requires the frost panels. This option is best chosen only when necessary.

Solar Boosted Gas
This is a great option when you have gas available. Solar panels keep your water warm, and the gas does just a minor heating to make it hot only as you need it.
- Equivalent to Rinnai Infinity
- Stainless steel tank
- High flow rates
- Endless hot water
Solar-boosted gas hot water can be bolted on to a roof-mount or a split-system. Whatever your roof and ground requirements, you can choose the ideal setup. Superior Solar can keep you informed of the options, pros ad cons, so you can be confident in your choice before committing.

Rinnai Infinity
Much more efficient than an electric heat-and-store method, if you have gas at your premises it is worth considering gas hot water.
- Rinnai's famous Infinity
- Only heat the water you use
- High flow rates
- Endless hot water
A simple wall-mounted heater, ideally near a hot tap outlet. Can be installed outside or in your garage. Typically the easiest installation is near your old heater that is being replaced. This keeps all the plumbing connections close at hand.
For roofs that are under shade, or when no space is available for panels, then gas hot water is one of your best efficiency options.

Double the tank life with stainless steel!
We all use and recommend the stainless steel tanks. A stainless tank will outlast a normal steel tank and offers double the warranty.
Solar hot water panels have very few breakages. Their components keep powering on year after year. It is almost always the tank that fails first. So anything to extend the tank life, extends the entire solar hot water system.
It will outperform for only 19% more upfront, and you have the confidence of double the tank warranty.
Solar hot water reduces your hot water bill by approximately 75%. Every year of extra life you can get from your system is money well spent. For a little more upfront, you get less breakdown headache and could double the return on investment. We really cannot overemphasise our recommendation to upgrade to stainless steel.
Robert, ShortlandIt’s terrific, gives hot water all year round. The only time we have had to use the booster is on days that we have experienced heavy rain.
